Avoid Roaming Charges Like a Pro Traveler in the U.S.

Global travelers wanting to stay connected while traveling to the U.S. face a common challenge: roaming charges that quickly rack up and turn a simple trip into a costly affair.

A few years ago, the charges were limited to calls and text messages, but now, the main usage for many international travelers is data. Travelers coming to the U.S. for work or tourism rely on data most of their day to work with clients and peers or to stay in touch with their families.

They need data if they have to locate anything or make use of any service like a cab or ordering food. Most payments are now cashless, and travelers need an active connection on a smartphone in case they need to pay for anything.

Avoiding high roaming charges is becoming easier. Here are some tips and tools for staying connected without the hefty costs. Before that, we will provide an insight into the high cost of roaming charges.

    How Roaming Charges Add Up

When an international traveler uses the home network provider’s services in a different country, the local carrier takes roaming fees from the home network, that is, from the country the traveler has come from. These charges can be for text, calls, and data and potentially lead to expensive surprises in the bill.

For instance, a person traveling from Japan to the U.S. will be charged a roaming fee as their home network would be active there.

Roaming fees can be anything, from a few cents per minute for calls to several dollars per GB of data, depending on the carrier’s agreements with the U.S. networks. The global roaming tariff market was more than $72 billion in 2022.

These charges make simple online tasks done on smartphones, like GPS navigation or checking emails, costlier.

    Avoiding Roaming Charges

To avoid getting surprised by roaming bills while traveling in the U.S., consider the following cost-effective options for staying connected.

    Use Secure Public Wifi

Most cafes, hotels, and shopping malls in the U.S. have free wifi, which can help manage data needs affordably. You can use the free wifi for high-data activities like streaming content or downloading large documents.

To ensure that the free wifi used offers you a secure connection, it is advisable to use a virtual private network (VPN) when connecting. The data is encrypted while you work with a VPN, so your information remains secure.

SIM Connections Using a Local Carrier in the U.S.

For decades, international travelers coming to the U.S. have purchased a local SIM card. Most U.S. carriers offer prepaid plans that include data, text and calls for a fixed monthly fee. However, this method is now becoming obsolete due to various reasons.

Using a local SIM card requires physical swapping of your primary SIM card in order to insert the local card. This can be inconvenient as you lose connectivity with your home network.

Apart from being cumbersome, this method can also lead to network issues and loss of contacts on your smartphone.

Some smartphones are not capable of handling SIM cards from different countries as their carrier’s service plan locks them.

Prepaid SIM cards often have limited coverage and do not offer much flexibility.

    eSIM Technology

The eSIM technology is rapidly gaining ground, with over 450 million devices in 2023. eSIMs allow travelers coming to the U.S. to activate a mobile plan without needing any physical SIM card and with no swapping. It is an online service connected to eSIM-compatible smartphones that let you download a local data plan directly. This helps bypass any roaming charges.

Many smartphones do not have the option to swap SIM cards. Also, in some cases, travelers cannot afford to tinker with settings and lose network connectivity while manually handling physical SIM cards.

eSIMs are incredibly convenient for travelers due to their immediate access to the local network, complete with data, text, and calls, without the need to visit a store. Travelers can activate these plans in advance and they work seamlessly as soon as they arrive. Travelers can explore United States eSIM plans for quick connectivity upon arrival.

eSIMs provide a highly convenient solution with their flexible packages. Terminal eSIM recommends enabling the multiple number option that ensures your home network is also active.

Save Money while Staying Connected in the U.S.

These innovative tactics will help you control your connectivity costs during your travels.

    Use Offline Features

Google Maps lets you download specific map areas for offline navigation. Also, most content streaming services have download options for offline consumption. Use these tools smartly to avoid high data fees.

    Monitor Data Usage

Your smartphone has data usage tracking tools that can help you check your data usage in real time. Use this tool to analyze your data usage and avoid data-heavy activities if you can.

    Disable Background Data

Some phone apps continue to consume large amounts of data even when you are not using them. You can go to settings to disable background activity for apps that do not need to be constantly updated all the time. This can mean social media apps like Facebook and Instagram, which do not have much work-related use.

If you are unable to disable specific apps, a quick press on the battery-saver option on your smartphone stops unimportant background data usage.

    Don’t Use Calls and Text

Apps like WhatsApp and Telegram use data for sending text, images, voice notes and even to make calls.  These apps do not use the calling network and can work anywhere to stay in touch only with data usage. Whenever possible, call using these apps to save on calling minutes.

    Staying Connected in the U.S.

Staying connected while traveling to the U.S. does not mean expensive roaming charges. International travelers can make use of these tips to travel smarter and save on communication costs. Most importantly, gear up with an eSIM-compatible device to ease your travel transition.
