October 2024 holidays for Thai people to enjoy!
This October brings two public holidays, both commemorating a great Thai king. First, 13 October is the eighth anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great’s passing in 2016. The ninth king of the Chakri dynasty reigned for an Asia-record 70 years and brought about many changes to the developing kingdom. As the date falls onto a Sunday in 2024, 14 October, the immediately next Monday, will be observed in lieu of the actual date.
This gives us a three-day period of holiday from 12 to 14 October. If you wish to extend your holiday a bit more without requesting leave, consider travelling on the night of Friday, 11 October.
The next holiday was 23 October, the one hundred and fourteenth anniversary of the passing of King Bhumibol’s grandfather, King Chulalongkorn the Great. His legacy in contemporary and modern Thailand is still largely felt, most notably by the eponymous university named in his honour. As of 2024, Chulalongkorn University is the highest-ranked university in Thailand and among the top 500 globally.
This year, the date falls on a Wednesday; while that can be tricky for people who have already used up their annual tally, it gives those fortunate a choice of going two in front, taking Monday and Tuesday off, or two after, Thursday and Friday. Either of this choice will give you a five-day holiday that spans across the weekend.
