    The Evolution of Food Delivery Services in India

    Indians’ lives have drastically changed in the past decades due to their fast-paced, hustle-bustle lifestyle. People don’t have time like they used to. Our dependency on the internet has also influenced our eating and delivery choices, giving rise to many food delivery startups in our country.

    This online food order app system provides you with the flexibility to explore multiple cuisine options and food choices from different restaurants right at home.  This adds to the overall convenience attached to online deliveries for everything you need without having to visit your favourite restaurants physically.

    Let’s see how the food delivery services in India grew with time.

    Early Beginnings: Dabbawala Culture in Mumbai

    The food delivery concept in India started back during the 1890s with the dabbawalas of Mumbai. This culture was run by men who collected home-cooked food in tiffin boxes (dabbas) and then delivered it to people across the city, ensuring maximum convenience with the comfort of home food.

    This system was accurate, organised and fast, proving the potential of food delivery. From old-school dabbawalas to now being able to order food online, food culture in India has progressed significantly.

    Evolving Lunch Delivery Services in the 90s

    In the 1990s, lunch deliveries in offices began to gain popularity. Office-goers and busy professionals in urban cities found them convenient, increasing their demand and giving rise to cloud kitchens in commercial areas.

    2000s: Ordering Food via Phone

    As telephones were introduced in the 2000s, it brought a significant shift in the lifestyle. Restaurants started to take orders over phone calls. This allowed customers to enjoy their food while being at home without having to step out and visit the restaurant. It was highly convenient, and this made food delivery even more popular. This system laid the foundation for what online food order apps deliver today.

    Introduction to Internet

    The arrival of the Internet and smartphones caused a major transformation, and dependency on the Internet started to grow more rapidly.

    By the early 2010s, an online food order app system had emerged, aggregating multiple restaurants on its platform. These apps allowed users to browse menus, place orders, pay online and even track their deliveries in real-time.

    Impact of COVID-19

    The COVID-19 pandemic boosted the food delivery sector. With lockdowns and other safety protocols, there was a big shift toward ordering food through an online food-order app.

    Companies adapted by following various safety measures, such as contactless delivery, which helped them gain consumers’ trust and reliability during the pandemic and made online food order apps the real deal.

    Today, online food order apps offer a combination of your favourite restaurant meals and healthier options. Given their accessibility and convenience, food delivery apps have become an everyday habit for many consumers, and their dependency on online food delivery is increasing daily.

    The evolution of food delivery services in India has been tremendous, and the market is flooded with numerous food delivery apps. These food delivery services regularly assess consumer behaviour to stay updated and make necessary changes for maximum comfort.

    With increasing internet penetration, technological advances and evolving consumer preferences, the future of people who order food online in India looks very promising!
