f your security camera does not offer flexible storage options, you have a tough time storing your videos. SD card is the simplest choice for users as they do not have to spend on expensive storage devices and cloud storage.

In this article, we will discuss what an SD card security camera is and how it works. We will explain the different types of SD card security cameras, their applications, and other things you should know.

How Does SD Card Security Camera Work?

An SD card security camera has a dedicated slot for a microSD card. You need to insert a card into it for storage.

Whatever it captures, it saves the data into the inserted microSD card. That said, it does not require an NVR, dedicated hard drive, or cloud storage. The SD card is more than enough to store videos and images that you can access through the application.

Note: Reolink SD security cameras are available at discounted prices during the Christmas sales.

Types of SD Card Security Camera

We can classify SD card security cameras into four types.

    Wireless Security Camera SD Card

A wireless security camera SD card is a Wi-Fi camera. It is networked through your home Wi-Fi and powered by a battery. The camera is easy to install, which is the reason people go with it. You can connect an SD card to save videos in it.

Reolink Argus 4 Pro is a wireless and battery-powered security camera that supports microSD card up to 512 GB. It’s a dual-lens security camera to capture a 180⁰ field of view. It records videos in 4K, so you see intricate details and optimal clarity. It detects objects with its enhanced PIR and ensures accurate alerts using AI. At night, it uses Reolink ColorX technology to offer true colors.

No Wi-Fi Security Camera with SD Card

No Wi-Fi security cameras require a SIM card to use for networking. Just like the SD card, they have a slot for a SIM card. It is a completely wireless security camera powered through battery or solar. It is mostly used as a standalone camera in remote places.

Reolink Go PT Ultra is a 4G LTE security camera with microSD card support. You need to insert both cards to enjoy all features of the camera. It’s a battery-powered camera that you can recharge or connect to a small solar panel. Its pan and tilt motions cover a 360-degree view in 4K videos for incredible video quality. It offers dual night vision, smart detection, compatibility with smart home devices and a lot more.

Wired Security Camera with SD Card

The most reliable type is the wired security camera with an SD card. It can be PoE or DC-powered. PoE cameras require an Ethernet wire for power and networking, but it offers excellent performance. While DC-powered cameras need Wi-Fi for networking and are connected to a DC adapter for power. You can choose any of them and they save all the recorded videos in an SD card.

Reolink TrackMix is a Wi-Fi 6 security camera with SD card support up to 256GB. It’s an incredible dual-lens security camera that captures the wide-angle and zoomed view in 4K resolution. It automatically detects objects and tracks their motion through pan and tilt movements, covering a massive area.

Outdoor Security Camera with SD Card

Outdoor security cameras are specifically designed for outdoor surveillance. They cover a wider area and withstand rough and tough weather conditions. It is durable enough to last for a long time and offers excellent performance. It also has a dedicated SD card slot to store videos locally.

    Applications of SD Card Camera

    Home/Business Security

SD card cameras are perfect for homes. You can ensure optimal security without paying charges for cloud storage or monthly subscription. The videos are stored in the microSD card, and you can view it whenever you want. Similarly, it is good for business security. You can install it in your office or commercial area and enjoy 24/7 surveillance.

    Outdoor and Wildlife Monitoring

For outdoor surveillance, SD card cameras are great. They can work in outdoor conditions and ensure the security of your house or office. People prefer to monitor wildlife and get instant alerts if there is any motion.

    Remote Locations

You can install outdoor security cameras in remote locations. If they are solar-powered, they can recharge on their own and work on the 4G network. They are maintenance-free and installing them is quite easy.

How Long Will a Security Camera Record on an SD Card?

The duration of recording depends on the video quality, compression, SD card capacity, continuous/motion recording, and various other factors.

For instance, Reolink cameras can record up to 580 hours continuously (24/7) at 1024 Bitrate/kbps in a 256GB SD card. If the bitrate increases, the video quality is improved, but the recording time is decreased. The same SD card can record up to 58 hours continuously (24/7) at 10240 Bitrate/kbps.

If you use Reolink cameras on motion detection, the same SD card (256GB) can record for a very long time. On motion detection, you can record up to 2330 hours at 1024 bitrate. And at 10240 bitrate, the same SD card can work up to 233 hours.

    FAQs

Do I need SD card for security cameras?

You need storage to record videos. You can either use an SD card, NVR, cloud storage, or FTP server, depending on the compatibility of the camera. However, an SD card is an easier option.

How to install a SD card in security camera?

There is a dedicated slot for the SD card. Find it and insert the card in the right orientation. Press gently and the SD card will be ready.

    Final Words

SD card security cameras are convenient. You just need an inexpensive SD card to store all videos, and there is no need to pay for cloud storage or NVR.
