3 Tips For Your First Meeting With A Financial Planner

If you’ve been thinking that you’d like someone to speak with about your financial health and the future of your finances, meeting with a financial planner can be a great way to accomplish these goals. However, if you haven’t really shared your financial life with anyone in the past, knowing how to go about this and being comfortable with it can be a bit challenging. Luckily, with the right preparation and knowledge, meeting with a financial planner can be a great step to take toward your future.

To help you with this, here are three tips for your first meeting with a financial planner.

    Come With Questions

Once you’ve decided that you want to meet with a financial planner and you have an appointment on the books with them, you should start preparing some questions that you’d like to ask them during your meeting.

When working with a financial planner, you want to partner with someone who you feel that you can trust and that will be good for your financial future. You can discover this by asking the right questions, like how they get paid, what your costs will be for their services, what their qualifications are, how their professional relationships typically work with clients, and more.

Align Your Goals With Their Expertise

In addition to determining if you can trust and work with this new financial planner, you also want to make sure that your financial goals are in alignment with their expertise in the finance world.

To do this, think about what your financial goals are and what you’re hoping to accomplish by working with a financial planner. Then, you can ask them what they feel like they have the most experience with and what their philosophies are with regards to the type of financial guidance you’re looking for from this partnership. Depending on their answer, you might feel like this would be a good working relationship or that you might want to continue looking for someone else that more closely aligns with you.

    Have The Right Documents Available

While speaking with a financial planner about high-level financial principles and concepts can be good from an information-gathering standpoint, to really get any use out of working with a financial planner, you need to come with your own personal financial information ready.

Ideally, you should bring documents like your recent pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, investment lists, information about debts you have, and other documents that will allow your financial planner to see your overall financial health. This way, they can start helping you plan for your financial life specifically rather than just giving you general guidance.

If you’re trying to get ready for your first meeting with a financial planner, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you prepare for this.
